The Rivals By Richard Brinsley Sheridan

Sheridan draws from and satirises ‘sentimental love’ plays in a comedy that contains elements of farce and social satire, often ridiculing recognisable types such as the socially aspiring country farmer Acres. The lively humour of the play comes largely from the highly witty speeches and exchanges between characters. It is progressed by many asides to engage the audience.

It is set in the hugely fashionable 18th century Bath where anyone who was anyone had to visit.

The main plot concerns the love affair between Capt. Jack Absolute and Miss Lydia Languish. It involves disguises, misunderstandings, and subterfuge, ably provided by interfering guardians and self-serving servants who seek to help or thwart the designs of their betters.

The action culminates in a duel scene. You will have to watch the play to see how it is all resolved, if the lovers get together, and if there is any loss of life!
